The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that the annual rate of deforestation is about 1.3 million square km per decade, this is having diverse effects on both the atmosphere where its affecting the Carbon Cycle and at the same time affecting the animals that inhabit these forests especially tropical forests ones like the Amazon.

At the current rate of destruction, all accessible rainforests except a few parks and preserves will be destroyed in 40 years this is something that needs to be stopped and controlled. The efforts of originations across the world is not enough not only do we need more of an effort from governments but really it comes back to the user, we need to be confident as consumers of these goods and products of where there timbers that are being used in these goods are coming from. By doing this it will help prevent the sourcing of illegally felled timber and help change manufactures attitudes towards their sourcing of timbers and push them to use reliable sustainable timbers where the cycle of cutting and replanting is in place.

This is not only for the softwoods used in construction but also the hardwoods used in furniture products.

Modelling of global industrial roundwood and fuelwood consumption from 2010 to 2060 indicates that demand for industrial products will increase in the future, while fuelwood use will decrease.

Below are some pictures taken in Ireland by the EPA for their report on deforestation in Ireland we can see from these pictures that it is not only the tropical rainforests abroad that are in danger but also the woodland at home here in Ireland are also under treat by both farming and construction of housing and roads.

We all play a part in whats happening and it needs to be stopped weather that’s trough informing people of the effects of deforestation or introducing new laws around the conservation of our woodlands, something needs to be done.
