This was my interpretation of the brief we were set for our final year design Project, to design a piece of furniture that was influenced by connections, that would appeal to the masses and would solve a real world problem.
I focused on peoples connections with the things that they possess, and furniture as the vehicle to express this connection. I looked at what people have that they hold dear and separated them into two categories. The first is the things that remind people of good times and people, the trinkets that everyone has that they hold dear and want to be visible. The second are the things that we do not need to see, but want close at hand. Paperwork, things for work or school, we don't need these in our lives constantly, but we want them within reach, yet out of sight.
I designed the piece to incorporate these two categories into one piece of furniture. The top portion of the piece would be made as thin as possible to limit the visual impact of the piece so that what stands out from the piece is the prized possessions that are displayed on it. The bottom section of the piece is designed to conceal those things that we do not want to see behind a beautifully profiled front, which radiates out from a point below the cabinet on the same lines as the legs.
